Rechargeable batteries for cordless machines

A rechargeable battery decides how long a cordless machine keeps working and how hard it can be pushed. Platform voltage sets the ceiling: 12V packs suit compact drilling and fastening in tight spaces, 18V covers most site and workshop work, and 36V or 54V packs feed the demands of saws, breakers and outdoor equipment.

Capacity in amp hours governs runtime, while the cell quality and the electronics inside the pack govern how much current it delivers under load and how well it survives cold, dust and repeated fast charging. Packs are platform specific, so check the mount and the electronic handshake against the machines already in the van, not the voltage alone.

Lithium-ion chemistry holds charge between jobs and accepts a partial top-up without damage, which makes a spare pack on the charger the simplest way to remove downtime from a working day.
